Mt 05 250 did that same thing last week but also puked a little. I was pulling good size boat up a hill and all the sudden the temp gauge went almost all the way to "h". Then cooled down very quickly. Ford is now informing me it is the heads and head gaskets. Not sure if yours was doing any puking???

I say check out the TSB. My 05 also had a faulty instrument cluster which read higher temps while towing. The Ford dealer installed a new cluster and all has been well ever since.
