Mallory E-spark electronic conversion kit

Howdy everyone... anyone in here running a mallory e-spark conversion kit to get rid of their points? If so how did you wire it up?

There's about 3 or 4 different ways to wire it according to the instructions based on whether the system is equipped with an external ballast resistor or a loom resistance wire.

It says in the instructions most motorcraft points systems had a ballast resistor or loom resistance wire from the factory. How would I check this to make sure. (I know just about nothing about resistors... do they drop the voltage, the amperage, or both?)

And in one diagram they show running the coil + off of the resisted power and running a full power 12V to the module, and in another it shows the coil and the module both getting the resisted power....

Sooooo confusing!

If you just want to get rid of the points why not go with a Duraspark III sytem off a later truck. They work well, give very little trouble and the parts are relatively inexpensive. You can probably get everything you need from the local salvage yard.

Yes the wiring has a resister loom wire. To confirm, start the engine and measure the voltage to the coil, should be in the 9-6vdc range. It has a tendency to start high and drop down as it heats up. If it does not it will have full battery voltage.

Awesome! Thank you for this useful little bit of info!

60F100, That would also work just fine, but I just don't have the time to make it to the junkyards during their business hours, plus I would like to try a couple different conversion kits (this one, and the petronix one) to decide which one I like the best, because we need to switch over about 7 trucks from points... It might be hard to find that many duraspark systems in the junkyard!

watch the pertronix. i had it on my 300-6 and loved it. on my 302 i can't get one to work. have gone through 3 so far. now i have to send it off to pertronix direct to swap it out. it did wonders on my other truck, but i've heard alot of bad things about the v8 kits.

Any number of companies selling the "plug and play" Windsor distributors, and a few selling the same for the FE's for less then $100.00....... Doesn't get much easier then that......

I've used at least a half dozen Pertronix units on V8 Fords and have never had one fail. I know there are a bunch of guy's on this forum that would recommend them.
