ok i know i dont post much . but i can usually find info needed from somebody elses problem . not this time . i have found 1997 f150 xl reg cab 4x4 70,000 miles last inspection 2003 tires all flat engine 4.6 oil smells gasie anti-freeze smells ok but looks like tea .lady says she has started and let run ,but no battery in sight .5 speed manual she said it needs clutch 300.00 tires , battery . wants to sell to settle estate is outside in hay field .body in better shape than my 02 was. Q:what problems am i buying for 500 dollars i know belts and all rubber stuff prob need replace , brakes and ect i am thinking engine sensors ,ect. did i mention i sold my 2002 and got a vw jetta TDI 43 miles per gal . but i miss my ford truck bad .thanks in advance MACKS
oil smells like gas.....could be due to trying to start it multiple times to no avail, oil change is needed anyway. Coolant looks like tea, obviously time for a coolant flush(may need to be flushed twice). Could use a set of plugs, the 4.6 is a little easier to do than the 5.4. All fluids should be inspected and or changed, but your getting it for $500??? Check the underside for excessive rust!!! Other than that a good cleaning fresh gas, and you should have a decent truck.
fordtruckfan90 thanks for input . i plan on good flush and change . plan on using alot of pb blaster on things like 4x4 dif vaccum on front axle which i am sure is froze up .its the other stuff like sensors on engine that i dont know any thing about . do you guys have any experiences with trucks that have sat this long ? once started and driving are all the u-joints going to fall out of it ? i dont want to have to rebuild everthing . but its prob going to be a crap shoot . i just want help to figure out the odds and how much i am going to end up in it . 500 truck & 500 tires & 100 battery, oil ,anti-freeze, brakes ,belt, hoses god the more i think i should walk away but its not that rusty under it .ran my hand under door .not bad. pretty good has not been on road in 5 YEARS if my math is right. i dont know its going to depend on what you guys think ok so i got one yes thanks again macks
you'll have to check and see if there are grease zirk fittings on the ujoints, if they are original, more then likely they dont. I understand you maybe takin a crap shoot, but you could also get a good reliable truck out of the deal. As far as sensors go, unless they broke, you SHOULD not have any problems with them. slowly break the truck in, think of it as a new truck, you dont want to get it per say and start beating on it, then for sure you could have problems. Make sure to check the air intake tubes for varmints and air filter! i think thats all...lol
for $500 that doesnt sound too bad at all, will definatly need some work, do everything fortruckfan said, give it a good tune up and hope for the best, also another thing i'd consider doing it draining the tank and putting in fresh gas cause ya never now wut kinda shape the gas is in or what even in the tank, could save ya from having to change a fuel filter too, for $500 if it has a title i'd get it, what are you plans for the truck?
fordtruckfan and countryboy116 good point on the critter end . i would have suck em up for sure. plans are take the boat to the river and to the woods to fill the deer feeders .maybe give one a ride home to the freezer ,drive to work on those days school is cancelled . getting older and 4wheeler is to dam cold ,real cold ice fishing thanks for everything .we made my mind up . iam getting it this week. let you know ,probably have more ??s later. thanks for input macks
As long as it isn't a rust bucket you can't lose for $500 IMO. Worst case you dump a few thousand into it with a junkyard engine and/or tranny and other things and still have a running truck for less than it is worth. Best case you put $500 into it in tuneup's and it runs fine.
You'll get more out of it at the scrap yard than that. Go for it!
You can even part it out on here or on Ebay and make a HUGE profit!
Even if you decide to keep it, and even if you have to put $1k-$2k into it, it would be worth it for hauling/towing stuff or just to beat around on offroad.
