e 350 wont start

Hi guys, i could use some help, my 90 7.3 will not start, i took this cube van to a trans shop to get a tech to check it out. The guy never did get a look at my trans(long lunch) but on my way back home it stalled and will not start. About 3 months ago i installed new gps, fuel filter, fuel pump, push button gp switch as per dave s, it always started right up, now it will not even try to start, there is fuel at the the injectors power at the ip, batts are hot with charger on for hours.Spins fast, it should at least fire and stall, nothing, even on ether that i dont like to use nothing it spins faster like its trying to start but wont fire, i put fresh fuel in the filter nothing, 20 sec cranking about 2 min beteen tries gp all seem to be good checked with test light any help would be great .Thanks, Greg

Sounds like you already have done this but.... I would crack open all of the injectors a little and crank it to make sure I got as much of the air out of it as possible. I've had a bunch of air intrusion problems with my '94 already so I've messed with bleeding it a lot. I can crack a couple of injectors and fuel with come out of them but I still have to bleed the fuel filter a lot and crank alot before it will start. That tells me there is a lot more air in the system than it would appear to have. I get fuel to the injectors because I can see it coming out but there is still air in there too.

If my Cummins gets air in it you have to crack about half of the injectors to get it out and get it primed, you might have this problem.
GOOD LUCK!

Since you've checked for power at the IP and that's good, you might want to see if the solenoid is actually working. Try applying power to it to see if you hear any clicking, or do a continuity check with an ohmmeter to see if it's open or not.

How much fuel in the tank..... above 1/3. Did you fill up anywhere on the way home...possibly gas instead of diesel.

When you mentioned getting fuel at the injectors, do you mean there are pulses of fuel at the injectors when you crank the engine? If so, that would indicate that your fuel shutoff solenoid is operating.

Well i checked the fuel ss and it is clicking, no gas in the tank just diesel, half a tank, this motor is in an old 1990 u haul 14 ft van and the log book in the van shows the engine was replaced (2004), if my math is close this thing should have about 60 to 70 thousand miles on it, it looks like new. I cranked this motor all day, not even close to starting any diesel i hit with ether and i have alot of them (i dig dirt too) was already running and working. There is good amount of fuel at the injectors but not really pulsing out.I changed the two rubber hoses comming off the fuel filter down to the returns, no change.I thought this thing would at least fire up and then stall on ether, nothing.

I suppose it has the E4OD..... so no pull start available. How fast is it cranking over .. if you can count rotations it's too slow. Was the IP possibly OEM not replaced with engine....

I doubt, if the engine wasn't getting fuel at all, that ether alone would be able to make it start, even only for a second or two. Kick a few times here and there, maybe, but not start.

Have you checked for good fuel flow at the filter? You might want to hook up a hose to the schrader valve and see if there's good flow coming out of the filter to supply the IP.

Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when starter cranking engine over. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of starter engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose. When all finished hook up the FSS wire .

If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.

Just a note,
I tried to pull start my '94 IDI turbo 5 spd. with my Cummins Dodge, had to do it in reverse because of how it was parked and I didn't trust anything under the frontend not to bend. Appearantly 21.5:1 compression and a low gear are too much for the tires to handle. No the brake wasn't on.
All I could do was skid the tires, no rotation at all, you might be able to pull it forward in a higher gear but I hope you have tow hooks or a sturdy aftermarket bumper.
But as PLC7.3 a U-HAUL almost has to be an automatic.
