First off I want to say that I really enjoy reading about everyones problems and suggestions on this site it is very informative. This is my first post so go easy on me.
I have a 2000 F250 V-10 automatic with 67000 miles, transmission flushed every 30000. The transmission has a high pitched wine (sounds about like a sewing machine with a little surge to it) right behind the torque converter. This noise only happens in park, neutral or when coasting with no load on trans. I took it to reputable trans. shop had them check it out they thought it was torque converter, as was my first thought. Brought new one home with me and 8hrs later still same noise. Pulled pan oil looks clean no major chunks, some metal on magnet, dont think pan was ever off when flushed, so assume amount off metal on mag was normal, very little amount of aluminum in bottom of pail when I dumped oil out, no brass. Trans shifts ok, pulled 32 ft camper 100 miles last weekend with no problems. I really dont think now that it is metal to metal, possibly hydraulic noise? Anyone heard of anything like this, any suggestions?
It could be the pump cavitating a bit, and that is usually caused by air being sucked into it. And what can cause that is the suction screen and the tube from it and where it seals into the pump case can have leaks and allow the air in there, the fluid level would have to be pretty low for a cracked screen body to allow air in though. Also a pump wearing out, valves leaking, valve body gasket, etc.
Also be sure to check that the bolts holding the valve body are snug.
I have been surprised at how many times I have found a couple bolts loose. If they are loose enough, you can suck air thru the gaps like the other guy described.
Either use an inch pound wrench and look up the torque specs or just gently hand snug them. No need for King Kong torquing or you will strip the threads.
Also, probably this is not your problem but often the Power Steering pumps on Fords make a whining sound. It is obviously not the same location as the TC but maybe you are hearing the whine when you are not under load anyway.
Thanks Jim good ideas will check bolts, sound is definately coming from trans, using stethoscope can hear noise from behind t/c and from cooler lines, nothing from engine block ahead. When I originally heard the noise thought it was something like p/s pump or possibly squeaky belt, alt bearing something simple, not so lucky though.
Hello RED,
Did you figure out what is making the noise yet? I think my truck just started doing exactly what you described. It sounds like it could be the torque convertor, but the my transmission seems to function fine and the oil is clean.
Please let me know what you figured out.
Mike, I decided to send my trans for a rebuild more for peace of mind, because we take the truck for family vacations pulling the camper, and didn't want to end up 500 miles from home with the trans bad. The trans is now quiet, called the shop that rebuilt it and they said that they found nothing wrong other than o/d may have slipped a little at one time. My noise could be heard through the cooler lines and behind the torque converter with a stethescope, fluid was clean like yours. My guess is probably a valve or hydraulic type noise, I assume when they rebuilt it probably replaced o-ring or something that was bad and didn't really catch it. If I had to do over maybe take to some one who would spend some time and check out valve body hope this helps. Let me know what you find , maybe we can help others save some $$$$
RED-SD,
I decided to replace the torque convertor, and so far no whine. I do not drive the truck everyday I only test drove it about 4 miles, so this weekend I plan on driving it and towing my camper to test it before we set off for Maine in 2 weeks. The whine my truck had also went away when the truck shifted into O/D. Was yours the same way? Thanks for the reply,
