I have an 86 F350 auto (c6) with a Carbed 460 in it. I have the opportunity to get a Fuel Injected 460 out of an 89 4 x 4 5 speed truck.
Questions:
The 89 is Fuel Injected. I already rebuilt the entire top end of mine so I wanted the block off the 89. Can I just remove the old heads and FI intake stuff from the 89 and install my stuff from the 86 on top of the 89 block?
Since mine is an automatic will I have any issues with the flex plate or flywheel swap?
Is their any other issues I might need to know about? Or any questions I did not ask that I should have here?
The shortblocks are 99% the same. So yes, use your carbed heads and intake, cam if you have upgraded it. Balance changed in 79 so you're good there as far as using your old flywheel/flexplate. I believe the 89 has a little higher compression pistons and it will have straight up timing already instead of the 4* retard of the stock 86.
that's what I thought too. Thanks for the reply. I have not changed the cam in the old motor but will in the new one. I'm looking for a little more low end torque so I'll probably start looking for an RV cam. Any recommendations?
I use the Ford Racing camshaft in my 460. Part # M6250-A460. Widely used in marine applications. Great low end torque. Available at your local steelership. See link for details. -Ed
