I was looking at adding a 2nd tranny cooler to my 99 f350 7.3, but most don't have the fans, and the ones that do are pricey.
I was thinking about getting just the fan for the oem cooler. I found a couple but was wondering what all the gurus here thought about that.
the cheapest price I found for a fan was $89, does anyone know where to get one cheaper? also what size would be best. they run from 10"-16", but I'm not sure about which one.
You Can Get A Tru-cool From Dieselsite.com, A Fan From Ebay For Less Than $10. With My Tru-cool My Temps Are Less Than 135* And Towing In Extreme Heat Up A Grade Didnt Go Over 185*. I Bought A 12" Electric Fan On Ebay For Around $10 Shipped (they Are Very Inexpensive Compared To Retail) Anyway I Installed It Over The Tru-cool For Slow Speed Climbs. To Be Honest I Have Yet To Use The Fan Since My Temps Stay So Low. I Decided To Leave It On Just In Case.
I had a fan mounted on my old '99 PSD and quite honestly, didn't see much of an improvement of temp drop. It was 10" in dia and mounted it on the ac condenser on the front of the truck but down low so it would blow on the tranny cooler. Now, it pulled air through the ac condenser first so maybe that was the problem. I would imagine if you travel a super slow speeds with a load or back up a trailer a lot, a fan may help you. I just didn't see any benefits of a fan. If you can get your hands on a 6.0 tranny cooler, you will see a drop in temps.
thanks for the reply. So you think I should add an additional tranny cooler? do you not think that just adding a fan to the OEM cooler would work? obviously I wouldn't need the fan on the hiway, maybe going up a steep grade or in town w/ heavy traffic.
the Trucool 4739 w/thermal bypass, I live in the cold north, is $143 but it doesn't have the fan, which I do want.
I Think You Should Try The Tru-cool First And Go From There. Just A Fan Alone.....welll I Agree With What Chris Said. From My Experience The Tru-cool Was Enough, But I Tow About 10 Times A Year 90% Highway So The Tru-cool Was The Ticket. The Fan I Installed Was Cheap So No Major Loss, But I Havent Had A Need For Yet (which I Think Speaks Alot For The Tru-cools Capability)
I seen a 6.0 cooler on ebay, the high bid was like $240? I realize that's cheap. but there was still a lot of time left I'm sure it'll sell for a lot more.
So here's what I've got narrowed down so far for a better tow set up.
John Woods Valve Body $225
Deep tranny pan hods 3 addiotional qts of oil $85 at bulkparts.com
Deep tranny filter $39
20 qts tranny oil $130
inline tranny filter, (the same one Ford dlrs use) $31.25
Tekonsha P3 trailer brake control $118
still trying to figure out the tranny cooler deal---------PRICELESS LOL
as you can see and obviously know it gets expensive quick, I'm all ready over budget. and those prices don't include shipping
what are you going to do with your truck? The VB is the one to get for sure and an additional cooler. If your towing ALOT then yeah get all those goodies and protect yourself, otherwise I think the trans cooler and VB are the only things you'll need. My .02
I've been looking at the Ultra-Cool that Napa sells. It's basically the same setup that the Tru-Cool is but a bit cheaper. They claim a 60* drop in tranny temps. We'll see! I'll be getting it this month sometime.....
so just the valve body and transcooler add on? forget the new trans pan?
I think I'd add the In lin tranny filter though.
I've got a gig, hauling 5th wheels, boats, etc. up to 14,000 lb. maybe the truck in stock form can handle it. but I'd rather be safe than sorry. the add ons would be a very wise investment. much cheaper than a new tranny for sure. do you know of an inexpensive in line fuel filter to go along the drivers side fuel line? if so where should I place it?
From what I've read, the deep pans don't do much for cooling for the money and expense. They can't hurt but maybe a wiser choice is to spend the $$ on synthetic fluids instead. I assume you have an aftermarket trans gauge. Do not drive by the factory gauge - if you have a truck with one.
Do you have gauges? If so, what sort of temps are you running? Without that, it is very hard to say that you need extra tricks to cool your trans or not. Get the gauges first, if you run hot then add the 6.0 cooler.
thanks for chiming in,
Yes I have full gauge cluster, plus I have fuel pressure gauge coming.
my tranny tem now runs 170 @65 while towing lite--5-7k lbs. I'm also going to check my cooler return line on the side of the tranny, make sure that's o.k. as well.
My main concern is that it's not summer yet, and when it is and I get into some of the more hilly areas, passes, etc. that it may overheat my tranny.
The 6.0 cooler that was on ebay sold, any ideas where to get one cheap??

Empty you should be about 75 above ambient. On a stock tune with my BTS trans, I am 55 above ambient. At your level, you could benefit from a 6.0 cooler and they fit real well. 4 times the size of your cooler.
BTS might be able to have one to you. Give them a call. 1-870-422-3673. Also ask about their Valve Body. You can talk to them and they might be able to guide you better as to where to go even if you are not buying stuff from them. Brian talked me thru the removal of the gear shift lever when I was having problems.
