I was wondering what the 2000 Ford Expedition Premium Speakers compare to? Im running 2 MTX 12's and they sound tends to crumble. Is this under-amping or can someone please explain. Thanks a lot.
The factory speakers are nothing more than 5x7 paper weights. If you want to add a little something to the Expy then go with aftermarket. Start at the HU, this is the most important upgrade (plus you can run RCA's to your amp instead of using the line converter). Get two good sets of 5x7's or 6x8's and you won't regret it.
FYI- there are different recommended speaker mounting depths for the speakers in the rear doors as there are in the front. The pioneers I have wouldn't fit in the rear but had plenty of room in the front doors. The mounting depth is less in the rear but they are both 5x7 speakers. You can check the crutchfield website to find the mounting depths.
I agree with you John8172 about that paper weight idea. I thought about just keeping the magnets!
You know, I've got a '97 Exlorer, I put a JLAudio 10' Stealth box in the rear pushed with a Kenwood 500 watt mono bass amp. The "Premium" speakers were junk, but the "Premium" amp is ok to about 50 watts rms. What I did was buy a set of drop in Boston Acoustic 5x7's and a set of 4 Bass-Blockers form the local car audio store. With the new speakers and bass blockers attached to all of the speakers, it really sounds like I upgraded the whole system. None of my friends (serious audiophyles!) realize that I've done nothing else to the system except the speakers ($45 a set) and bass blockers ($5 (2) sets).
