replacement tranny
Got a 90 4.9l 5 speed 2wd that's in dire need of a tranny. The current one will not go into 5th and reverse is grinding.
Would like to replace with a used one but don't know what my options (codes) are. Converting to 4wd would be great if it can be done for a good price. If not, I would like to know whats going to get me around economically with the gas prices at what they are.
Any ideas

Your best bet if you are trying to stay cheap is to replace it with a Mazda 5 speed, which you probably already have. These can be found for pretty cheap. The other option is a ZF5 tranny. It's a better transmission if you are towing heavy loads, but it's probably heavier and doesn't get as good of mileage...and they are more expensive.
