2002 Explorer tranny removal
I'm getting a 2002 Explorer XLT 4.0 from my friend body shop. light hit on front right. easy fix. another friend is a Ford mechanic for 20+years. says this year is bad on tranny's and rear hub bearings however he says I'm getting a great deal on this car. he said tranny might not go but if it does and if I remove tranny, he will rebuild it with the just the cost of parts. he's done a lot of these trannys. question- how hard is it to remove the tranny? does the transfer case have to come out also? never worked on a 4 wheel drive vehicle before.

Yeah, you do have to pull the transfer case, it's mounted to the tranny. I have a 98 and the tranny was rebuilt at like 85k. My sister has an 02 with 96k and is running smooth. The way I see it, if the tranny ain't broke, don't fix it.

Have him beef up the tranny and install a pressure boost valve. It makes the shifts firmer and reduces wear and heat, which helps the tranny last longer. Also a B&M plate type transmission cooler is much better than the stock tube and fin cooler.
