in my 86 i want to put a good stereo system but i dont want to use the stock holes
Rigt now i have the Original reciver and 2 160watt kenwoods in the doors and thats it but i want a little more power and it would be even better if i could use the 160 watt speakers that are in there now
if you want to keep the stock radio, you can do this: Buy a line level converter. This takes the high level output coming from your current head unit, and turns it into a line level signal, suitable for an amplifier.(You could also, instead buy an amp with "speaker-level" inputs)then connect your existing speakers to the amp. Youll get much more power and way better sound this way.
The other thing you could do is buy an aftermarket reciever. They usually put out enough power to make any pair of 6.5" or 6X9's sound pretty damn good. Good luck!
u really risk loosing sound quality with an inline converter. u could always mount a new HU in the glovebox although it becomes a hassle to change tapes and/or CDs. another idea is to get a shaft style HU that retains the stock look.
