Hello all I Got a P1316 code and seached on the forum and found that it is most likely the wireing harness or the wiring under the valve covers so I replace those and nothing changed. Not having the equipment to do a buzz test I towed it to a local Diesel place and they did the buzz test and are saying that it is the IDM unit on one side. Ford (canada) wants 1700 for this so I called the local International dealer and it is 439 but they do not have any ad it will be at least a week. My question to all of you is :
1) should this fix the problem
2) can I replace this part myself
3) does anyone know where I can get this part faster and or cheaper?
The IDM is inside the drivers fender right behind the F250/350 badge. The wiring between that box and the injectors is the most common issue as you've discovered in your search. You've replaced the portion of the wire under the valve covers. You might also check the wires from the plug at the valve cover back to the IDM to make sure you don't have a short in that section of wiring. If you know which side the bad reading was on you would have a place to check. If not, you might look at both sides.
I would also inspect your fender liner and wheel well liner for any cracks or holes that may be allowing water up near the IDM. Water can cause IDM problems, and you don't want to replace one, and have the new one go bad too.
It seems like I've read about IDM's on ebay. Maybe someone who knows for sure will post a link.
Check the wire harness, the large one that goes over the top of the drivers side valve cover. Inspect between the harness and the valve cover.. It will rub and short out.. use a mirror..
