I am trying to install a new transmission on an 05 F250. i am having a bit of trouble trying to instal it with the torque converter attached to the trans. would it be easier to attach the TC first. what do you think. any input would be greatly appreciated. thankx fellow trans. installers
Yeah, don't put the TC on the flexplate and then try to install the tranny
It has to be inserted into the pump, splines aligned, fully inserted, etc. Doing it the other way you risk breaking something.
What I've done is use a piece of strap steel, drill holes, and bolt it to the bellhousing to hold the TC fully in place until it's just about ready to be bolted to the engine. Remove strap, move tranny an inch, and bolt up tranny to the engine.
the problems i am having is getting everything to line up correctly. the truck is lifted about 8 inches and the trans-to motor is up high. i am using a standard floor jack placed on an elevated platform and once it get close to install it will slip and then i go at it again. i did take off the wheels to lower everything. i guess sooner or later it will all find its way, i hope.
I feel your frustration. I just changed a rear differential pumpkin on my 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix (very similiar to a Ford 9 inch) using a floor jack to lift up the pumpkin. It fell off of the jack 4 or 5 times, once onto my hand! (Yea, that hurt)
You might try placing some wood between the jack and transmission for a stable mount, then use one or two straps to tightly hold it all in place until you get the bolts in.
I usually tilt the motor down in the back a little, then the fight isn't as bad. If the TC isn't al the way in the trans, when you start it you will take out the front pump.
It was one on one last night and after a few attempts i over powered her. I got the trans close and grabbed some long bolts and inserted them into the lower to bolt holes on the trans. then when she wasnt lookin i pushed it together. everything is done except the front drive shaft and new trans cooler. I hope this one will last more than 50,000.
