Wow, business is now starting to pick up(which is surpising), so I don't have the luxury of taking my truck in for just the regular maintance so I'll have to start doing that myself as I can get it all done before I actually open up the barn.

So here we go with the questions:

I figured that I would switch to synth. oil and I was thinking about Mobil 1 5w40, thoughts? comments?

Also out of the sponsors here, any general consesus on who the best is as far as reliability of quality OEM parts(and of course a good discount for FTE members)?

Any other things that I should do that would make things easier, quicker etc on future changes? I believe there was a upgrade to make oil draining easier or quicker or something like that(Fumoto valve I believe?). I apologize for this, but up until now I just enjoyed having the dealer do it as it was easier on me, now it isn't with business picking up(surprising but thankfully). Thanks.

Yea, Fumoto Valve:
Fumoto Drain Valves

I don't really know much about all this stuff, but that one I happened to have bookmarked. If I changed my own oil I would install one for sure.

It all sounds like fun if you've got the time.

Yeah get the Fumoto Valve. I believe diesel manor has them for like 25.00 or so. Makes life real easy when doing oild changes and filling containers for the UOA.I am not sure who will have the best prices for OEM filters as I have an account with the local MC distributor so my prices are great. As far as oil ask 100 people get 100 different answers. Most people like the schaffers 9000...I think thats the syn. Stuff. Others prefer the rotella and the Mobil 1.

Good Luck and welcome to the club as far as DIY maintence. You will find it enjoyable and there is great info. on most anything in the tech folder.

shopdiesel.com has fuel filters cheaper than the link provided above.
RACOR PF F4604: 6.0 Powerstroke diesel filter RACOR Fuel Filter PF F4604 FITS 2003-2007 6.0 POWERSTROKE DIRECT OEM REPLACEMENT CALL FOR CASE QUANITY DISCOUNTS
shopdiesel's oil filter is only .50cents cheaper though.

i like using schaffers 9000 in the winter and the 15/40 7000 in the summer. also you can sometimes find good deals on oil filters at pep boys when they do the 2 for $7 deal (if they still let you buy filters for our trucks)

Thanks to all for the help on where to get the filters. I definately look between the schaffers and mobil 1 and see the pros and cons of both of those. There was one user here that was all into the oil stuff and I haven't noticed his handle on here for a good bit. At the time I didn't follow those links because I didn't have the need to, now I kinda wish I did. Oh well live and learn.

Rotella synthetic is a good, economical reliable oil and is readily available at Walmart. Mobile 1 is an excellent synthetic, but a little pricier. I also have a hard time finding it on the shelves of auto part stores...it is very popular. Definitely go with the fumoto. I use Motorcraft oil and fuel filters. I've heard many advise against Fram (oil filters), but I've used them in my other vehicles with no problems. As for oem parts, I price them locally first and the check them against the prices of them on ebay. I've gotten some outstanding deals on ebay; although some particularly heavy parts are best bought locally...Just my 2 cents.

Fram oil filters are repackaged Racor filters which are what you want. I think you meant to say Fram fuel filters aren't that great.

I think I've heard you have to check the frams to make sure they are the right ones?

I'll probably just make sure I get the stuff that has right labels on them just so I don't have to deal with the worry did I get something that is just repacked under a different label or did I get something worse. Mainly for my peace of mind as I make a substancial part of my living with this truck and I need it to last.

That's him, I appreciate the link. I'm still leaning toward Mobil 1 syn. 5w40. So far, alot of it seems to be six in one half a dozen in the other. My first change will probably be done in the middle to the end of the month based on current driving that I have been doing lately. Thanks to all for the help and I'll be doing some more reading in the tech folder between now and the first experiment(atleast with trucks, I've been doing it on the tractors for yrs, just seems different somehow).
