Front Axleshaft Question

I was putting new front brakes on the other day, so I figured I'd remove and grease the hubs. Upon removal of the manual hubs I noticed that the axleshaft moves a lot, behind the internal snap ring, there appears to be a nut, is this a nut, should it be tight? I have never dealt with this style of front axle. Thanks for your help!

That "nut" is actually a washer. There should be one round one, followed by one "nut" shaped, followed by another round one, then the snap ring. Its ok for the axle to move in and out, so long as that snapring is in its place. These hubs actually require no greasing, and neither do the bearings. However, some have put grease into the sealed bearing, (i myself havent) however i dont know for a fact whether this is a plus or a negative in terms of longevity. If your hubs are not sticking, or getting tight, grease will probably do nothing. Behind all the trucks ive worked on (our early 99, 01, other 02 and mine), behind the hubs are dry. We all have over 170k, and the early99 and 01 had the sticking hub problem, which was fixed by warn repladcement. Hope that helps.
