Hello Gentlemen,
I have been stumped over this for months now and cannot seem to find the problem. There is a very loud roar in the left front tire of my PSD. It gets worse when slowing down, and every once in a while it will stop for a week or two. Does anyone have any idea what this is.
Thanks
Take a ride, when you hear the noise again, place your hand close to, or even on the center hub, see if you can feel a difference in temp, but if you have a bearing problem, you should be able to locate the side by doing this.
Thanks for the help guys. I'm fairly sure that it is the wheel bearing on the drivers side. Is it okay to change only the bearing that is roaring, or should I just go ahead and replace them both.
If it was me, I would replace both simply because they are the same age (read: same problem may be happening on the other side and you can't hear it yet), you have all your tools out, plus you're greasy and sweaty already. That's just the way I'm wired though...
Now, if you need your truck back on the road ASAP, then maybe not.

if you still have factory lock outs check those. i had a 02 that was doing that and thought sure it was the bearings, took out the lockout and the sound was gone. put Warns back in and was good to go.
I have this same problem and have replaced both hubs, the caliper slide pins and the brakes. Still the problem persists.
Took it to Ford today and left it with them all day.
They say it's the Toyo Open Country M/Ts. They say that everything else is in excellent shape and that there is nothing wrong with the truck.
I see in your sig that you have mud terrains. I bet we have the same problem.
I bet you both have wheel bearing issues !!!! If you just put on the mud terrains I can see you're not used to the noise.. how ever... If they've been on for a while and this noise started I would suspect its not the tires... I know tires to get louder as they get older as well... The rubber gets harder and starts to get a little louder...
I would definately look at the main wheel bearings though ! Even if the dealer said everything is fine ! they probably didn't take your hubs apart to look at the needle bearings !

Just installed brand new hubs, complete units.
Still have the noise.
The old hubs look find and the bearings had grease on them. The ESOF wasn't working though so I did suspect possible bearing failure hence the changing of them. The first time I noticed the noise was right after I installed the new mud grips.
We have a strech of highway here that they recently asphalted. I don't know what they used but on that strech the road noise from the tires is loud. Even with the highway tires on my cabover.

I'm now convinced it's the tires.
I wouldn't have thought it was the hubs.... Did you check the needle bearings on the main bearing... Thats after you take the front shafts out and pull off the main bearing assembly...
I would agree with you about the noise being the tires if you just put them on though !! But if you have any doubt.. check those needle bearings if you haven't already... Replacing the hubs only eliminates the hubs.. not the bearing itself !
Hope I've read your post correct and you only replaced hubs and not the main bearings !
