91 Explorer questions

I have a 91 Explorer with automatic and 4WD with a 4.o V6. I bought it as a donor vehicle for an other project but until such time that I am ready to take it apart, I have been using it to move stuff around the place. I have pept it in 4WD low. It has started kicking out of 4WD with a bang but it did go back in until yesterday. I haven't had a lot of cchance to look at it but it seems it's a problem in the transfer case. At least that is where the noise comes from when it bangs, The vehicle is in rather poor shape so I imagine anything could be wrong. Since it has no front hubs I'm thinking it has to be the transfer case. I am wondering if that electric motor used to shift the transfer case is either not holding it in place or is not all the way in. It could be a bad bulb but the 4W low indicator is not lighting up. I seem to remember it working before. My queation is, can I somehow permanently engage the case in 4W low until I get time to take it apart? I intend to just use the front and rear axels and suspension on my 53 F-100 so I really don't care about the rest of the vehicle.
