I have an 04 250 5.4 and it has about 98,000 miles on it and I think it's time for plugs and coils. I have read all of the stories about the dealer tune ups but the fact is I just dont have the time to get it done. So what are your thoughts and what can i expect to pay?
If you don't have time, then you're going to pay to have the dealer do it. Results vary greatly from dealership to dealership concerning price, quality of work, speed of work, even exactly what they will do and won't do for the tune up.
As a minimum, your plugs should be replaced (use Autolite plugs!), fuel injectors checked and cleaned, COPs checked, truck should be scanned for codes, IAC valve cleaned (if applicable) and air filter checked.
Also think about changing the serpentine belt, PCV valve and O2 sensors. Those 3 items will take about 10 minutes total to change. Just pay attention to how the belt goes on.
Don't forget fuel filter, if it is not on a 30K interval already. You probably won't need coils unless the ones that you have are bad.
I recently took my 02 f250 in for plugs etc. My dealer presented me with a "flat rate" sheet with all of the necessary items listed so I knew exactly what the hours would be and the shop rate. I just did the math and went from there.
I just got off the phone with the dealer. He gave me a price of $220.00 for changing the plugs (plugs included) I asked about the cops and he told me they would check the boots for tears and corrosion and only replace what is needed. The tech has worked on my truck several times before and I have not had a problem with him or the dealers work SO here I go. Thanx for the input.
