Dana 44 leak.
Hi guys, I just bought a 96 F150, and this weekend while I was changing the fluids I noticed that the front dana 44 was leaking a bit. I wanted to know what the procedure would be to fix this problem. I'm guessing that it would be a gasket of some sort. Is this a big deal to fix? On another note the truck has just hit 100,000 miles so the owner's manual states that the diff oil should be changed. should I just take the truck in to a dealer to get the diff oil changed and the front diff looked at?

Depends on where the rear is leaking. Many OE assemblies used RTV in lieu of gaskets to seal the housing cover. After the 100K or so miles, this stuff could dry up & start leaking. Most rears tend to drip/sweat a little from the pinion seal too & after many miles these "drips" add up & the resulting rear housing starts looking nasty - altho not really seriously leaking.
Pull off the fill plug & see where the fluid level is. Taking it to a dealer is great if $$$ is no object .....

That's what I'm trying to avoid. A huge bill at the dealer for something that I could do in an hour or so on the weekend. It is leaking from the bottom of the front diff on the rear side. I'll take a look at the fluid level. It probably would be fairly low though as there was alot of wet dirt/oil mixture caked on.

Another question I have is how I would drain the diff oil? There is no drain plug. And it seems that the diff is bolted directly onto the third member which doesn't leave allow one to drain the oil by just unbolting the cover.
