Don't you have to make sure the camshaft is at it's lowest point when you remove or install a rocker? And do this for each rocker? The manual I just looked at said to make sure you have the index mark in the 11:00 position and thats it. Am I missing something?
I don't understand the 11:00 o'clock position either, but that's what the Helms manual says. I've had the pushrods and rockers out 3 times, twice before I knew that the crank was supposed to be at 11:00. I never had any problems either of the 1st two times but figured I'd pushed my luck far enough and did it Fords way the 3rd time. Since then I have talked to a Ford diesel tech who says he never sets the mark and has never had a problem either.
Did you notice valve spring pressure on the bolts that hold down the rockers as you were removing them? And on a install with hydraulic lifters don't you have to put some pressure on them to bleed out the oil from the lifters?
Yea, thought it might be something like that but I cant see how all valves can be closed at the same time. And still wondering about bleed down on the tappets.
