Reverse noise?????

Hey guys I need some help again. About 1 out of 6 times I back up I hear a low growling noise. Could this be my T.C. going bad? It's a 97 expy 4x4 w/ 140k.

A TC doesn't change direction when you go into reverse, so you can probably rule that out. The first thing you should check is the parking brake shoes, those are likely the source of the reverse only growling.

How do you check them and are they easily accessible?

Block the front wheels. Put the transmission in neutral. Jack up the rear wheels and spin them by hand. If you feel any drag or hear rubbing, your parking brake is dragging.

Could also be worn out pads or shoes....

Of course, we have no idea exactly what you are working on...

Thanks guys, I'll check 'em out.

In the 97 expedition, the rear brakes consist of pads and a rotor for your normal stopping brakes. But what is different is that the parking brake is separate from the pad/rotor braking system. The rear rotors also have a drum behind them that the parking brake shoes are in. These shoes are only applied via the parking brake pedal. That being the case, they almost never get used and tend to rust up and collect crud around them. You do have to pull the rotors off to inspect.

That sounds just like an awesome design, one of ford better ideas - lol

So I guess I should be setting the parking brake all the time to help aleveate this problem.

Actually no...the way to keep the parking brake drum and shoes in good working order is to use it once in a while to stop the (slow moving) vehicle. Simply setting the brake does not allow the shoes to keep the inside of the drum clean. For that to happen, you need the drum to be moving across the face of the shoes.

What type of brakes do you have on the rear? Disc or drum?

It has rear disc brakes. I can see the disc through the wheel. I never thought there would be a drum on the other side of it tho.

I think rear disk brakes were all that was available on the Expy. The parking brake uses a drum that is part of the rotor. Expys and Exploders have been using this setup for years.

Thats what I thought. Expys have discs, F150 has drums.
