96 f150 with a 5.0
got to work this morning and right after parking, the engine killed on me. i was confused so i started it back and and within 20 seconds it died again. no sputter, it sounded more like a rag had been stuffed into the intake, and it kinda died slowly. i didnt have time to worry about it so i forgot and on the way home it started doing the same thing, only it would stay half running if i kept on the gas, and it was low on power. every now and then it would die out and i'd pump the gas till it started again. it didnt seem to be making any real weird sounds while driving except for a backfire when it would restart on the go. it wasnt smoking or over heating.
i unhooked the battery for a few minutes to clear the codes. started it and ran it a while and it ran fine. shut it down and started again and the check engine light came back on. i dont know if i still have a missfire so it could be nothing new but would the light come on if it was the fuel filter?
update. gave it another try and it shut down much quicker this time (like this morning).
it took a good bit of cranking before it would start again but i could really smell the gas so im not betting on the fuel filter.
Pull the vacuum line from the FPR. If it is wet with gas, you probably have a leaking diaphram.
Also check fuel pressure at the shrader valve on the fuel rail.
Sorry for short suggestions, but you hadn't given us much pertinant info to go on.
Now that you tell us you are getting CEL and you smelll gas, I doubt you are having fuel filter problems.
I suggest not erasing anymore codes (disconnecting battery), and read your codes.
1996 was the first year for OBD II computer systems and Auto Zone should be able to scan it for you. If by chance it is still OBD I you can check codes yourself with info from
checked the vaccum line like you said, not wet. and i cant check the pressure because i dont have a gauge for it.
the last time i had brought it to a shop the guy said he couldnt find the OBD I plug or whatever. so i dont think i do. i called autozone and the lady said they rent scanners for 149.99, wow.
i havent changed the fuel filter since i got the truck so i will change it out anyway. if that does nothing, i know of a shop that i could get to without getting on any big roads. ill just putt putt my way there
There is a thread going on fuel fillter removal problems right now, look through the posts.
I wouldn't bother with the filter at this point though, knowing what we know now.
You can check for fuel pressure after it stalls and won't start by quickly jumping out of the truck and carfully pressing the schraeder valve (bicycle tire valve) on the injector manifold line. It should have about 30-40 pounds of pressure on it.
Isn't that $149.99 at AutoZone only a refundable security deposit till you bring the tool back ??
By the way you are describing your problem, it could also be the TFI ignition module.
Ducky17,
Go pull the codes and get back with us on the code numbers. Right now we can only give you a few shots in the dark without the codes. Which can lead to a ton of unnessacary testing and wasted time. Get the codes and get back to us. Sorry not trying to sound like a dick as I have been on both sides of the fence trying to figure out issues before.
