1989 F250

Okay Guys i bought a 1989 Ford F250 with a very tired straight six and a 5 speed combo. The trucks Fuel injection system is pretty much shot and the truck needs some tender love and care as well as some work done to it. Okay my first question is should i rebuild the straight six or would i get better gas mileage by switching out the engine and putting in a 302 or a 351. my 2nd question is can i use the dog house off a 1984 F150 on the 1989. i always liked the 80-86 front end better than the 1989 and i got a parts truck with a great looking front end. and my 3rd question is should i just rewire the truck and get rid of the fuel injection all the way and go to carburator. thanks for your help guys i hope to soon be back to driving a ford which is where my big a*s belongs.

A swap is possible, it's just a matter of if it's worth it. All three motors will give similar gas mileage, within a couple mpgs.

Personally, strictly from a MPG standpoint (and cause it is there already and easiest too), I would keep the 6 cyl (with FI), 5sp combo depending on how 'shot' the FI is (how shot CAN it be?). Will deliver better MPG than carb will if willing to learn about it. As for the front clip, have heard of people swapping clips from 96 to 80 and everything in between. Can be done. Got lots of free time? Is involved (amazing how many fasteners, etc Ford uses putting that sucker together) and RUSTY stuff is a big consideration in how hard it would be (I live in the land of salt). Structurally, though, it is a pretty straight forward deal, rest is investment in WD40 and hot wrench, etc. Cab style didn't change, box sides did on 87 up and fenders did in 87-91 and again 92-96. Different style lines, still bolt on.
