Varying Fuel Consumption

November of last year, I purchased a new E350 Extended Cargo Van from a local Ford dealership. Having heard rumors of spectacular gas mileage, 18-22mpg, I chose the 7.3 liter turbo diesel. Requiring adaptive handicap equipment, my van then underwent not only this change, but in addition, it was equipped with four wheel drive. Understanding all these changes could possibly alter the fuel consumption, I kept a close eye on the mpg throughout the my first ten thousand miles. Strangely enough, my fuel consumption remains between 11-14mpg. Can anyone offer suggestions why this mileage is so low? Will varying driving habits profoundly effect this average also?

Thanks!

Layne

Varying Fuel Consumption

Fuel economy is a function of weight, speed, acceleration, and idle time. As they say "Your results may vary." Adding the equipment may have taken a few mpg from the wonderful diesel economy. The heavier vehicle takes more energy to accelerate and maintain speed. My Ford dealer offers a K&N air filter for the diesel to help power and economy. There is also a diesel computer chip available from sponsors of this board, which is interesting to read about.
