Well, my wife has stated that, for christmas, she wants a CD player to replace the stock cassette only unit in her '95 Explorer. My question is, what is out there that will fit this vehicle without using an adapter kit? I want the install to be as close to factory as possible, but I just hate to pay Ford what they want for a factory CD/Casstette combo like the one in my F350. Any ideas? Suggestions?
get a aftermarket cd player. depending on what you want you can pick them up for around 100 bucks sometimes. most of them will have wire adapters so it plugs in right. also depending on location they install onsite which sometimes saves you a lot of headaches. also if it doesn't fit the plastic around the cd player can always be cut and redone.
Try looking at Crutchfield.com and a few local shops. There are double-din radios, and Din-and-a-half radios made that would not require a plate in the dash for a single din radio. I am running a Double-din Alpine in my X, but then again, the retail on mine was $1000.00 (glad I have friends... )
I would base my advice of the headunit off of how far you want to go with the stereo in the X. If all you are going to do is change the headunit, then my advice is buy a single din and use the plate mount with it. The din-and a half and double dins can get pricey. If you are going to redo basically the entire system, including adding amps and new speakers, then I might say pay the extra money on one of the larger units.
Even with an aftermarket, you can buy adapter plugs for the new headunit that plug into the factory ones in the dash. That way you do not have to cut any of the factory wiring. Easiest way and the cleanest way to do it. Plus, you can always remove it and put a factory radio back in anytime you want without any hassle.
Hope some of this helps. If you need anything, let me know...
