well can you tell if its an upper engine knock or lower. upper knock could be just the lifters or even the fuel injectors. which both of those will make noises on a brand new engine and never stop. its nothing to worry about. lower engine knock is the one to worry about. that could be any number of problems. if its a problem for you to hear or you notice the truck is performing different, i would take it to a mechanic or dealer to pinpoint whats wrong. but thats just my opinion

Sounds more like the cam phasers. Does it get louder when it's colder out? Sound like a diesel at times? It's been an issue on the 5.4Ls over the years. I had my replaced under warranty on my 04 and it's been fairly quiet since.

Trying to get educated with this question. Does the 4.6 have cam phasers or just the 5.4. I thought cam phasers were only used on the 3v 5.4 engine.
