Hey, I have a 4 speed tranny in my 73 F250 with a 390, and I kinda want to drop in an auto transmission to make my truck a little more trail friendly. What all would need to be done for this type of conversion?
Try to find a similar truck in a junk yard to use as a donor that way you can get every thing. You'll need a flexplate, steering colum, cross member (mabey not sure), and most likely a new drive shaft. I am sure there is 100 things I forgot thats why you want to find a donor if you forget something you just go and get it. Oh I already forgot you will need a radiator with a transmission cooler.

Buy A Floor Shift So You Don't Have To Mess With The Steering Column Crap.get A Trans Cooler So U Don't Need A New Radiator. But Personally A Manuel Trans Is Better On The Trail Now If The Truck Is For The Mud Go With A Auto.
I am in process of that Swap along with a 460 in a 2wd F1-00. You will need a deffernt brake pedal assembly. Make sure you get the brake rod. You didn't say if you are going with power brakes of not, but make sure you get all the stuff if you do. The drive shaft will depend on whcih tail shaft you end up with. Some of them fit, some of the require the shaft to be cut. In the 2 wd, the 4 spd tranmount will work. Don't know about the 4 wd.
Easiest way, find a tranny out of a mid 70s f250 4x4. Easy to do hard to find. I did the same thing on a 75 f250 4wd. Bought a 74 f250 2wd with a good tranny and a rotten body. used the tranny steering column and pedal hanger, shift linkage and carb (for kick down linkage) made a bracket for the transfer case shifter that bolts to the tail housing and a couple of the pan bolts plugged the speedo cable hole used the stock crossmember but had to move it a little back I think. Then had a drive shaft custom made using the stock slip yoke in the tranny it came out to be 11 inches long. Then you either have to get a radiator for a truck with an automatic tranny for the cooler or put on a separate cooler.I used a AC condenser which has worked great for the last five years plowing snow and pulling a car trailer.
