i am new to the diesel world and i took my 7.3 to get the oil, oil filter, and fuel filter change. i asked the man how many miles before i have to change it again and he said 3000. i thought the diesel was like 5000 or so. what is the proper miles before a oil change. thanks.
change intervals depend on oil and personal preference
the dealer changed my oil twice when I bought my truck and I could only get about 2800 miles
I then changed to rotella 15/40 dino and could go 5000 mi
I then changed to Rotella 5/40 synthetic and could go to 10k mi
your milage may vary
On a 7.3L PSD with a stock HPOP and stock injectors:
Rotella 15w-40 3,000-4000 Miles
Chevron Delo 400 4,000-7,000 miles
Rotella 5W-40 Synthetic 5,000-10,000
Schaeffer's 7000 15 W-40 5,000-8,000
Schaeffer's 9000 5W-40 5,000-10,000
I wouldn't recommend going over 5,000 on any oil without an oil analysis to determine historical results & trends for your setup.
Where'd you get those numbers Rich? Is this based on OA's? I've always run the Rotella or Delo dino oils at 5k intervals. If those are OA numbers are they from the older oil, or the new CJ oils? Now you've got me thinking about coughing up the $$ for an OA just to see. I've got Rotella 15-40 in the truck now.
Chris, just an estimate on the mileage over all the oil analysis reports I've seen. Rotella ussually will break down to a 30 weight before 5,000 miles. Delo can easily go 5-7K. The UOA's are about 1/2 CJ-4 and 1/2 CI4+ samples. Pretty wide range on some of the numbers, it all depends on the application/use of the truck.
All those numbers go out the door with a dual HPOP system - they really shear the oil down quicker.
oops, on the name in my sig. I changed my sig to honor those for Memorial Day, forgot to put my name back on.
Thanks Rich. Just using my eyeballs, the Delo has always looked thinner draining out of the pan than the Rotella does at 5K. Guess I can't trust the old eyeballs anymore.
