302 mileage

I just filled up today and figured that my 302 is getting 16.49 mpg. That is after a new fuel filter, air filter, plugs, 8 mm wires, cap, rotor, and injector cleaner. Is there anything else I can do to try to get a little more mileage out of it? BTW, this is routinely driving 70 mph on the highway to work. My neighbor told me the other day that he had put a true dual exhaust on his chibby and got almost 3 mpg better out of the exhaust alone. I'm open to suggestions about ford engines.

drop it down to 65 or 60mph and you will see a increase. I get 17 with a cross flow problem between my tanks and needing a tune up(misses at idle)

I drive it like a old lady. I take off slow and coast to lights when i see that they are chaning. I try to hit the lights without coming to a complete stop but that doesn't always work. I'm not a speed demon on the high way doing 60 in a 65. just give it a shot and see what happens.

I get 16 + on a MAf equipped 4x4 in my sig. OPening up exhaust helps ,high flow cat , I know people who sware the 460 -300-6 air tube helps (I do to . ) Stock tire sized ,air presure. Etc

If I keep it at 55 its 16 +
For every 5 miles above I lose 1/2 mile per gallon .

The biggest thing is to slow down and go easy on the throttle.

So no matter what I do, 15/16 mpg is going to be about it out of a 302?

I remember some guys saying ther are getting around 18-19. They may have 5 speeds though. My truck gets about 15-16. I usually go about 75 on the highway. This also includes some minimal mild hot rodding LOL. I have gotten 17 before a couple times when I checked it. The mileage isn't that bad, especially when you compare it to what the newer trucks get. Some of them get even worse than that.

fuel 302

my average is 18.25 at 60 with cc set, what really blows is 2001 freightshaker gets 10.60 pulling empty 53 ft trailer, think about this in the mid 60,s we built 4dr sedans with single carb,s 6cyl that gave high 20,s low 30, mpg, tell me how a rice burner computered up the *** get only avg. mid 30 or load it up with lethal batteries avg 44, just because its assembled here does not make it american

I usually get around 11 around town, but I tend to be really heavy footed. Last free way trip i kept it around 55 and drafted semis (5 or 6 car lengths) and I managed 17mpg! I was stoked about that. I usually get 12 or so on the free way if I'm haulin' ***. But I have 4.10s and 32'' muddies.

I guess exhaust will be next sometime this summer then. Are there any ramair kits for these trucks? That might help some more too. Or any better air filter setups? I already know about K&N so that will be coming along shortly. My friends 05 dodge with a hemi only gets 18. It's sad to think that in the 9 years after my ford was built that trucks are only getting 2 mpg more.

Ha. I bet he's using the onboard trip computer to get that milage number.. isn't he? The right way to calculate milage is total distance driven on several tanks divided by actual fuel volume used. The onboard milage calculators aren't called lie-O-meters for nothing, none of those Hemi powered truck get better than 12-15mpg if you do the math.

I'm having a hard time believing his numbers. I had his truck in my possession for a month when he went over to south korea, active army. I used it for a trip and that onboard computer showed 14.1 mpg as the best I ever got. That was unloaded essentially going downhill, marble falls to san antonio. When I went the other way with the trailer and load of furniture/misc it was showing 13.9. I don't know how it gained 4 mpg when he hasn't done anything to it at all.
