Is the main appeal of taking a ford and dropping in the Dodge motor ( other than the power) because I have heard that a Dodge will fall apart around its' great motor.
Yes, but a good bit of that will depend on what you pay for the 5.9 and if you have a transmission that will take the power you plan on applying to it.
Plan on about $5K for the parts and adapters necessary for the conversion. What you pay for a motor is up to what you can find.
I'm doing it because I want something different and to have some big power. My ultimate goal, eventually, is 800 HP on fuel, with the potential for 1000 by adding a shot of nitrous. It may cost about $7K to do that, but 800 HP is something that is not even currently possible with a Powerstroke. Here's the basic cost breakdown: Injectors - $1200, Dual CP3's - $2500, Turbo - $1700, Tuner - $600, Headstuds - $400, Valvesprings - $600.
What does $7K get you with a Powerstroke? Turbo - $3000, Injectors - $2700, Headstuds - $700, Fuel System - $450, Chip - $500 ... and you're over budget. Don't forget you'll need a Dual HPOP - $2000, Girdle - $1500, Rods - $2700, Pushrods - $250, Valvesprings - $100, and a few more small things. So now you've spent close to $14K and you've got what...maybe 600 HP that has questionable reliability?
For $14K, you could pull a stock Powerstroke out, get the Destroked parts for $5K, motor for $5K, do the work yourself, add less than $4K in mods (Injectors $1100, Turbo $1700, Headstuds $400, Tuner $600) and have over 600 reliable HP. Now subtract out what you would get for your selling or parting out the stock engine, and you've got more money for mods that could easily elevate you to the 800 HP mark.
FWIW, Kai Zimmerman Dynoed 630 a couple years ago with nothing more than a set of Flux 2's, HTT Turbo, and a Smarty - the mods I just quoted prices for in the above paragraph, minus the head studs. He still had stock head bolts and a stock CP3 pump.
So more HP for the same or less money, combined with reliability not yet seen in a Powertroke... I crunched the numbers before I decided what I wanted to do, and it just made sense for me to do the swap. Think about it.
Oh, I have thought about it often Jeremy. I actually thought I would be doing it myself because of my PMRs. What about a progress report? I am curious.
Lately I've been really busy with a bunch of other things, but that's ok because I've pretty much waiting on parts and wouldn't have had time to work on it anyway. But, it's about to start moving along pretty quickly I think. I talked to Kai today and my Destroked parts should ship next week. I've got head studs and valve springs on the way and may, just may, have injectors on the way soon as well. If I could get the BTS pumps sold, I'd have a turbo on the way too. I'd much rather swap it with the engine on the stand instead of in the truck, but I don't know if that will happen or not.
I'm hoping to get the trans to BTS week after next (I'm out of town next week) for the updates, then back home and work can really begin. Probably second week in June, I'll get the hard parts in the engine and start fitting the Destroked parts. I don't know if I'll have it in or not before I take off for my 2 week Utah trip at the end of June, but I'm gonna try to. However, I'm not going to rush it either. I want it done, but done right and neatly.
