Good info Mike, you probably have saved me a few hundred dollars for guages unless you recommend I get them.
I pull, maybe once or twice a month, a 5t trailer with a 7,000lb tractor w/front end loader. Usually the trip is within 30 miles of home. So I do not need to get any guages?
I was using the edge just as a monitor not a programmer, plus its the first one that came to mind. Sam I agree with Mike and would say SCT X3 with the livewire is the way to go. I even know where to get one from a great dealer with great customer service. email Vivian at DJ's Diesel Performance - vivian@dj-performance.com she will get you on the right track
Ryan I do not want to put a programmer on my truck and loose the motor warranty. I do like the gauge SCT has. After the trans was covered I don't want to give Ford anything to stop covering the head gasket problem.
Sam you simply return it to stock programming and take the programmer out. If its not in there..... and I think SCT does not show that it was ever plugged in. Plus with simple programs, in other words nothing like DJ's Looney Tune, you will be fine. The programs are designed to give you that added umph with out damage. Honestly talk to Vivian or DJ at that website they gave you and they can explain everything to you. Sam would I steer you the wrong way???????????????
I'm not saying don't install guages George. I won't say don't get them. It's never a bad idea to know what you're motor is doing. If I towed more often,I would do a trans temp guage just for a more accurate reading than what a stock guage is showing.
I don't recommend SCT,Edge,or any of the others Ryan. If I had a SD....it would be Banks all the way. I don't feel anyone else puts all the research and time into the products that they do. Heck I love seeing any of the programmers on the trucks when they come see me....all I see is cash.................
The dealer showed showed a piston that had a programmer used with it. I saw the injector spray pattern from a programmer adjusted diesel and there was star shaped spray pattern burnt in the piston. The stock one had a small circle spray pattern. Thisy is why I will not use one. I am the one they will get useing one and I can't lie! So I will use gauges.
Thanks Mike for the honest reply. You know my truck is STOCK, and I know stock suks, having said that besides the trans temp, what are the next 2 gauges you would recommend?
I'm like Sam, I have too much warranty left on my truck to have it voided with a turner or chip, so that is not an option I will be pursuing anytime soon.
Ryan thanks for your opinion. When my 100,000 mile powertrain warranty is up, maybe we will have this discussion again.
Ryan after I have 100,000 miles on my truck I will purchase a programmer. For now it will stay stock. 99,999 miles and the exhaust system will be replaced. But for now it whis will give me time to save money for my truck toys!
