Hey guys just got a 88 bronco with a 302 in it. I replaced the distributer cap with a accel one, plug wires and plugs. What are some upgrades that could possibly get me better gas mileage? It has shorty headers on it, and from reading the forums arent worth crap. But the truck has 150000 on it and runs great. Just want to improve it a bit. I am going to get long tube headers. I kinda baby my stuff, want the engine to go over 200000! Thanks guys!!
You're better off with a cat-back system and the shorties than long tubes and the stock exhaust. Keep the oil changed regularly and the fuel injectors clean, other than that there's no easy bolt-on answer to more mpg. Except maybe an egg taped to the gas pedal...

I'm not sure how you could use longtubes and the stock exhaust, they pretty much mandate replacement of the stock Y-pipe/cat assembly... which is the cork on these trucks.
If you want a relatively easy bolt-on upgrade get a set of 1.7 roller rockers, this motor uses pedistal rockers and these can be found for under $200 a set on ebay. The longtubes and the rockers will boost low rpm power and this will improve milage.
"In conclusion, there’s more to selecting a header than the power it makes. If you are making 350 hp or more, and live in a state that allows the use of two-cat H-pipes or off-road H-pipes, then the long-tubes are the header that will make the most power. However, if you have a stock or mildly modified car, live in a state that requires the stock H-pipe, or just want the simplest installation possible, the short-tube would be the best choice."
The graph the Baron linked shows that longtubes produce more low rpm TQ than shorties, and more TQ will get you better milage. The stock coil is more than capable of producing arcing between wires.. how much more spark do you need?
