hey guys, i have a 93 F150, and the power steering has been growling and ive added fluid and the noise just gets quieter, nevers goes away. i know theres a leak which looks like its coming from the pitman arm seal, but the seal kit says to take the pump out and basically rebuild the pump. any thoughts on whether its going to need a whole new pump or just a flush or what? thanks for the help.
Yea they tell ya that because the pressure regulator is built into the pump. If its running at to high a pressure it will blow the pitman arm shaft seal again...and again...and again. Well you get the idea, replace the pump with a Saginaw pump and dump the Ford pump in the trash can.
You can tell them apart pretty easy, a saginaw pump is all metal housing where the Ford's is plastic.
anybody know where, and how much one of the saginaw pumps? thanks for all the help fellas, appreciate it. also anyone know if there was another thread about this?
hey man, i had the same problem and i did the same thing just ignoring it until i had no power steering, my advice is to buy a new power steering pump. Saves hassle, cheaper in the long run.
ALSO, replace the rubber hoses. The old hose will deteriorate from the inside out. I
t doesn't take many rubber particle to clog the steering gear, which you will then have to replace.
Also since your there, use a filter on the return line to prevent future problems. I use the A1 Cardone slip in filter (FLT20 I think). It's only $2.00
thanks for all the help guys, i needed to replace my wiper motor, so that was this weeks project so next week im hoping to tackle the PS swap, man that pump gets annoying, lol.
