First Time Pulling

So went camping this past weekend and pulled my 22' Camper for the first time. Was fairly happy with how the truck handled with the equalizer but was abit surprised that I had to turn off the Over-drive and leave it in Drive. Other wise the rpm's would just fall off and would have to bury the pedal to get it to shift down even on level ground. Is this normal for a 1/2ton 351 4wd?

What year is the truck?
What gearing does it have?
How much does the trailer weigh?
How fast were you trying to go?

The owner's manual suggests towing in 3rd (OD OFF) and limiting speeds to less than 55 miles per hour.

I just get too dang jumpy trying to tow fast, and a 22 footer is NOT a little camper.

Not sure of the weight of trailer or gearing of truck. The motor has appr 120k miles so it has lost some compression I'm sure and was going between 60-65mph.

You never, ever tow with the OD on. Period. Same goes for heavy loads in the bed. The OD gear is just not strong enough to take overload like that for long. The engine doesn't put out enough power at low RPM's to tow a heavy load either.
