Converting to Propane ... Worth another look ??

With Propane at about 1/2 the price of gasoline, I am thinking seriously of converting my '68 F250 4x4 w/410 engine ...

I am looking for suggestions/opinions, pro and con, on converting to full-time propane power for my gas-guzzlin' 410 ...

My Son and I recently completed a full restoration of the truck and now I WANT TO DRIVE IT, DAMN IT !!! ... However, at 10 mpg fuel consumption, that is out of the question ...

I would greatly appreciate any serious suggestions and opinions ...

If you have a conveient source for fuel and dont mind spending another couple of grand on it go for it. If you set it up correctly you shouldnt notice any power loss, minimal if any MPG loss, and you will be able to extend your service life on oil, plugs etc. I would recommend dual fuel so you can run both fuels for greater range. Check with your local LP Dealer / clean air board there may be grants to subsidise the equipment.
If you dont mind a big tank in the bed you will be able to carry up to 100 gals of fuel

If you have more questions drop me an e-mail also you might want to look at the Alt Fuel Fourm

regards

Expect around 74% of gasoline's efficiency. With this past week's average price per gallon for retail residential propane of $2.31 (Missouri average), your gasoline equivalent cost is $3.12/gallon net before taxes.

This past week's national average for unleaded fuel was $3.97/gallon (Missouri's was $3.79) before Fridays huge gap-up in crude. Since both propane and gasoline's prices are closely tied to crude, you can expect a jump in both really, really soon (gas already jumped 14 cents yesterday).

Not much difference in the costs to amortize the cost of the conversion unless you do a LOT of miles with the old gas-hog.

When we tried it at Holley the best part was the cold starting here during the Michigan winters. It is a vapor and much easier to ignite at cold temps. Gasoline has to be vaporized first. If you're going to spend that much money I would suggest going to an aftermarket fuel injection system. Just stay away from CNG unless the valve recession problem has been over come.

Ditto about the fuel energy comparison ... Your mileage will probably decrease by about 10-15% as well as your appearent power curve ...
