speaker matching and performance
I am looking at a pair of 3-way, 6.5" Infinity's (63.5i) for the front that handle about 75W RMS, 225W Max; I am also looking at a pair of 3-way Sony speakers, the 6932 6x9's for the rear, but they are cheaper (about $100) and the deck should be pretty well matched as far as wattage goes.
Will I damage the speakers if I run them straight from the head unit, with no amp?
Also, does this setup sound solid to everyone? It will be in a fullsize Bronco, I would like the Infinity's to run the highs and the rear Sony's to take care of the lower ranges. Let me know what you guys think. I listen to everything except country. If anyone has any suggestions for other speaker choices they are welcome as well, I am looking to stay around the $250 mark for all four.
Thanks for you help.

Umm, I think we decided clipping is a BAD thing. Even if you set everything perfectly, you still cannot say for sure at a future date if you will be clipping or not with some music. Therefore, it is my recommendation that you always buy a more powerful amp than your speakers are rated. To be on the safe side.

Why not pioneer 3-ways and 6x9's? Keep it in the family.

If you don't turn it up too loud you should be ok. Just be carefull.

I once had sony 6x9, pioneer 6x9, jbl 6x9, infinity 6x9 in my car at the same time, we decided the sony's had the best bass and the pioneers sounded clearer. The JBL's were the worst of that bunch on that day. As much as I dislike the x-way concept, the pioneer 4-way 6x9's are some of the best sounding ones I have heard.
These are my experiences (a while ago), hope they help you decide.
anyway back to the question at hand, those speakers u mentioned will be fine running off the HU (headunit or CD player) but wont have be up to the best performance. i highly DO NOT recomend xplods to anyone, stay away nothing but bad news from my experience. that HU that puts our 22x4 might actually put out 15x4 and 40x4 peak, they lie about ratings. i would go with pioneer, i use them and they sound fantasitc for the price and will be fine running off a HU. make sure to keep the HU settings nominal (normal). in other words, save urself the cash and go for pioneer speakers to go with the pioneer CD player and keep the settings espcially the bass and the EQ pretty much normal and u'll enjoy years of lissening.
I have 5x7 plates(like 4" woofer and 1" tweet mounted next to eachother) they get verry loud and sound clean. Currently i have them running off my deck (clarion 22w x4 rms...YEA RIGHT!)
i had them running off of a cheap 2 channel amp and it made a huge difference! even though the amp put out only 50w rms it made for better sound.
Running them off the deck should be ok, but a small 2 channel amp would make them sound allot better....
but even if you decide to run whatever speakers off your deck, just keep an ear on the distortion, usually indicates clipping....
