Well, I finally got to tow the 40 foot hauler since the new parts I put on. Since I blew the stock gaskets a little while back, I got the dealer to hook me up with a cab off. I already had a few parts, but the newest ones were ARP studs, EGR sneaky pipe, and 165CC injectors.
I FINALLY feel like I have a TOW MONSTER. I had power to spare on all sorts of mountain passes. I sure love the way the 6.0 sounds when I scream past a wall, tunnel or something to bounce the exhaust back at me..
In a nutshell, I have quite a bit more power, engine coolant temp runs sooo much cooler and much more stable at any power demand. It wasn't hot out, but the engine fan rarely came on, and that is RARE when I haul the 18k trailer. Lastly I actually think my mileage is up a bit. The lieometer says I got 11.1 mpg. Im not holding my breath on that, but on the 240 round trip I still have 1/3 of a tank left. I think I will be more like 9-10 mpg, which is up from the 7-8 I was getting before. Every bit helps!
Sounds like youve got a good combo now. Hopefully it works out good for you and proves to be dependable for a long time. I am going to do my first long drive with mine this weekend so we will see how it goes.
You've definitely got a TOW MONSTER if you're hauling a 40' Weekend Warrior through the mountains and still have power to spare! I'll sign up and say that I'm jealous! You've got a lot of mods that I'd love to have. A few questions: did you have to get your tunes changed to adjust for the new injectors? Are you still running a stock turbo? Stock trans? I'll have to pm you with a few more questions.
Also, could you give us details of where your trip took you so that maybe we can identify or compare with your route (ie highways, elevations, passes, etc)? Thanks.

I can only imagine the extra power to spare that you have with 165 injectors as mine are only 150s and so far they have proved to be very powerful for my hauling needs. I don't see an upgraded turbo, if you were to do that you should see even more power(match intake amount with fuel amount and all that). Also if you like the stock turbo going thru tunnels, you'll like the non-vgts going thru tunnels as it screams at higher speeds versus the stock turbo.
Yup...I am really impressed with the overall performance. Finally, after the gaskets and studs have been installed, I feel like I have a very stout machine. Maybe at some point I'll dump more cash into it, like a bigger turbo...maybe when they stop replacing the stock one and Im out of warranty... I haven't taken it up Questa grade in San Luis or the Grapevine yet, but Im confident it will do far superior than before. The injectors seemed to give me much smoother endless power. The EGR sneaky pipe must have helped, because the extra fuel the injectors had on tap didn't add EGT's, rather the EGT's seemed more manageable. Party! ~ Brad
right on
good to hear that your EGT's were in check and all.
i want to do something with my EGR but will probably wait until it fails and then remove it.
yup, stock turbo. Well, smoke and EGT's are completely dependent on my right foot. Honestly it doesn't smoke hardly at all when towing. When I am crankin up a hill smooth a steady, I don't even seen smoke out the back. My wife travels behind me pulling the boat, and she says she doesn't see hardly any smoke, in fact she says no smoke. I run Innovative's Agg tow.
While Im not towing, I use the Extreme Street. I get just as much smoke as I did with the stock injectors. If I nail it before the turbo spools, then I get all sorts of Black smoke, which seems normal to me. If I come around a corner and nail it and it hasn't downshifted, it will smoke alot, but it did that with the stock inj also. If I use a smart foot and apply throttle as efficient as I can, I can get the truck to haul *** and smoke only a fair amount.
As far as EGT's,
Tow tune, I run down the freeway well under 1000 deg, usually 7-800 on flat ground. When chugging, It is easy to keep it under 1300.
Xtreme Street, unloaded, I used to hit 1500 deg with stock inj on a hard freeway merge. I am able to hit 1600 deg on the same run.
I won't tow with the Xtreme street, it hits too hard, and EGT's climb way too fast.

Those egt numbers are about how mean went when I just had the injectors done. However, when I added the turbo and hauling something, the turbo would actually hold the egt reading around 1100 even on some pretty steep hills that would normally cause it to skyrocket while towing the same load.

My numbers are close to yours Brad. The 1600* thing was quite an adjustment for my brain,it only shows for a couple seconds before the brain puts less pressure on the pedal. Now that the egr is gone have you tried a dab of 2 stroke oil in the fuel yet,it sure quiets the injectors
