Hey guys, Does anyone know any tricks in getting the pitman arm off other than a puller. I was working on it yesterday and I already broke 2 pullers. I have been soaking it in PB Blaster all night. ANY IDEAS???
What has worked for me is to first keep soaking it in PB blaster. Tighten the puller, but not as much as when you broke the others, and pound the crap outta the arm with a BFH. I used a 4lb hand sledge. Several good smacks should get it moving a little bit. Then tighten the puller a little more, smack it some more. Repeat till it comes off. I hope it's not too rusted. If you intend on replacing the arm with another one, you could slice into it from the side with an angle grinder but be careful you stop before cutting into the shaft.
I was doing the same thing you were doing but thing won't com OFF LOL. See I replaced the steering box and it came with it. I have a drop down pitman arm so i don't need the old one. Thats a great idea to grind it off, I didn't even think of it. thanks for your help
They make cut-off wheels for 4"grinders. That might be the ticket. You will definately need gloves, safety glasses, and a long sleve shirt. The wheels do cut good, but they come apart easy. You will want to have a couple on hand when you start.
I hd the same problem. They make a special pitman arm puller. I got mine at parts+ for like $20 bucks. I tightened it down with the air gun and smaced it twice with 5lb sledge and popped right off
