What is different about the 4.2 vs. 4.0 ?
Was wondering what is different about the 4.2 vs. the 4.0 ? Was thinking about trying to find a 4.2 and gradually rebuilding and "souping up" slightly to eventually put in my truck, a '94 4.0/4wd/auto.
Is it basically the same motor? Are the intake and the exhaust manifolds same, etc ? Thanks.

The 4.0L is based on the 1.3L V4 from the late
'50's, which turned into the 2.3L V6 in the mid
to late '60's, which turned into the 2.6L V6 in
the early '70's, which became the 2.8L in '74,
which begat the 2.9L in '86, which became the
4.0L in '90.
The 4.2L is based on the 3.8L which began life
in '82. They have no interchangable parts, they
really have no relation other than they are both
manufactured by Ford...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Aug-02 AT 09:44 PM (EST)]Thanks man, for your expertise (sp?) on this. That's a little weird how they have two engines pretty close in size, but so different - I guess they got their reasons. I did find out the following info for 2000 model year, right from this site, under "Specifications".
4.0L V-6
Block Material: aluminum
Head Material: cast iron
Displacement(C.I.): 245
Bore & Stroke: 3.95 x 3.32
Compression Ratio: 9.0:1
Horsepower/rpm: 160 @ 4200
Torque/rpm: 225 @ 2750
4.2L V-6
Block Material: cast iron
Head Material: aluminum
Displacement(C.I.): 256
Bore & Stroke: 3.81 x 3.74
Compression Ratio: 9.3:1
Horsepower/rpm: 205 @ 4950
Torque/rpm: 255 @ 3700

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Aug-02 AT 00:49 AM (EST)]If you are going to replace the engine why not go with the "new"
Sohc 4.0 207hp etc and less problems than the 4.2l
Or even a 302/5.0 liter there is a massive aftermarket for that engine

That does sound like a way, way better idea - a 4.2 swap is definitely not even close to being a good idea. Actually, the more I think about it, I think I will just run this 4.0 'til it drops and then do a performance rebuild on it OR get a new (used) truck. Thanks man, for the input.
