Thumbs down PSD codes PLEASE help I need some direction!

So after buying this truck to tow my 32ft trailer, it bogged out on me on the first test tow near my house.

Its a early 99 f-250 with a banks power pack combo (turbo upgrade, computer programmer, 4' exhaust, intercooler, air filter and gauges) since the purchase I have changed the oil, filter, fuel filter, and drained the water seperator. And the cam position sensor recall was done right before I bought the truck.

I havent driven it very much but heres what happend: towing 7000lbs in overdrive when traffic slowed a little, then sped up shifting it out of overdrive and holding 2600 rpm and 19-20 lbs of boost for mabey 1-2 minutes to catch back up to traffic the SES light came on and the truck started to loose power, so I throttled more and it just responded like it was running out of fuel and stalled on the hwy.

Stut the ignition off and then cranked again, it almost started and made me believe the fuel bowl was empty as it farted and coughed a little and fired only for a second or two. Then nothing for over half an hour cranking every now and then while waiting for a tow truck.

I drained the water seperator: nothing, no water just fuel.
Checked all fuses under dash and under hood: none blown.
Tach moved while cranking and wait to start was on.

So after I waited for an hour I tried it one more time and it fired right up no problem and limped it home.

Just pulled the codes with a snap-on reader and heres what came up:

Memory codes:

P0603 internal control modual (KAM) keep alive memory error
P0470 exhaust pressure sensor circut fault

KOEO codes:

P0470 and
P1298 IDM Fault: these DTC's indicate that the PCM has detected a concern on the line. Possible causes are: faulty PCM or IDM or open or grounded circut.

So the exhaust pressure sensor I can clean the tube/sensor and or replace but the others have me stumped on what to do? Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Also when the truck idles for any amount of time, a long light or something it really loads up and smokes real hard white in colour, but goes away almost like a 2 stroke clearing out when loaded. There is no black smoke when hard on the throttle.

Thanks for your time in advance.

the 1298 could be related to an under valve cover harness failure. It could also be the IDM circuitry has failed.
When you got it started back up did it sound as if it was missing on one or more cylinders, or run smooth?

That code, po603 is relatively normal if you got a chip, no worries there. Mine does the same thing, throws that code every time because i got mine chipped. Brandon and others will steer you in the right direction on the others, good luck. Also, welcome to FTE.

Can you clarify this? Did the wait to start come on then go off like normal, or did it just stay lit?

You should try setting the truck back to the stock setting to eliminate any codes or issues caused by the tuner. Then we can address what issues you still have.

If it ran normal, but took a long while to start I think the IPR may need attention.

Wait, was your oil full and of the correct grade? I know you said it was changed shortly before, but have you checked it since? Oil is a major factor in a PSD.

The WTS light came on like normal each time, the oil I will re-check as I did after I changed it and ran it for a few minutes after I changed it and topped it up again.

As for the tuner, its a big box under the dash at the toe board on the drivers side and is the Otto Mind one, its rather large and has replaced whatever stock piece was in there that I dont have to turn back to stock?

Do you mind explaining a bit more in detail about the IPR?

Thanks.

IPR= injection pressure regulator. It is a valve on the HPOP(high pressure oil Pump) that regulates high pressure oil to drive the injectors. Our injectors are HEUI (hydraulically actuated, electronically controlled, unit injector). The HPOP provides high pressure oil through the IPR to the oil gallies, to intensify the injection pressure of the fuel our trucks run realatively low fuel pressure through the fuel galley (~50 PSI) and it is intensified in the injector to 20K PSI. this is controlled (electronically) by the IDM (injector Driver Module) If the IPR had a small blockage it may have not been able to build the pressure in the oil gallies to fire the injectors. (thus causing no-start)

Thanks very much for the explanation, slowly I am learing the diesel scene.

I took the truck to the BD Diesel headquarters that I am lucky enough to have here locally and have a childhood friend as a salesman there too help me out.

Heres what they found:

P1298 IDM failure
P0275 CYL 5 balance
P0284 CYL 8 balance
P0470 exhaust backpressure sensor circut failure
Performed injector buzz test- all passed but triggers P1298 again
Road tested and brought engine up to temp and performed cylinder balance test and 5 and 8 fail. Installed test IDM and perform buzz and balance tests again, CYL 5 still failed (but may be known fault with test IDM) and CYL 8 passes and no IDM code sets.

So in short the truck needs a new IDM and explains why it smokes hard at idle with all that unburnt fuel dumping and ruff cold starts, from Ford here they want $1636 for it, has anyone delt with this place for one as an alternative?

eBay Motors: 1999 Ford Powerstroke 7.3L IDM Injector Driver Module (item 170221904533 end time Jun-01-08 11:13:14 PDT)

The other thing they noticed as a thing to watch is the injection control pressure (ICP) has 475 PSI on start-up and gradually dropped to 425 PSI at idle and that this # is at the lower end of spec. Does anyone have any info or experience on this?
