Bad Voltage Regulator

OK, I have determined that the Voltage Regulator is bad and need to replace. Short of pulling the alternator which is going to be a pain, is there a way to determine if the VR is internal or external. I can not tell from looking down on the unit. Also, do I need to pull the smog pump to get the Alternator out?
Thanks,

Bad Voltage Regualtor

Sorry, 86' F150 with 302. The Starter Solenoid is on the Fender but I do not see the VR.

With an 86 302 you should have a 2G alternator with an internal regulator. Get under the truck and look up at the alternator. You'll see a larger rectangular plug with three wires, and a smaller D shaped plug, also with three wires. The smaller D shaped plug is the voltage regulator.

Alternator Replacement

If the VR is internal, can it be replaced without changing the Alternator?
All help is appreciated.

Yes...you can put a new voltage regulator on your existing alternator. it's held on the back of the alternator with 4 torx head screws. You will most likely have to drop the alternator to get at them.

Bad Voltage Regualtor

Using the basic check of battery voltage with truck running. The voltage at the battery was over 16.3 volts DC. The normal range should be between 14-15 volts. If high then the VR is usually bad.

Also check to see if the 16.3 volts dropped when you turn on the head lights, it would indicate it is not regulating the voltage. Some cheap volt meters are not that accurate.
