Idle Problem with 2.3L Ranger
I have a 1996 Ranger with a 2.3L engine with about 125-150K miles (odometer quit at 96K and that was a few years ago). Overall the truck runs great. It starts easily and idles around 800rpm. However, if the engine speed is about 2,000 rpm, the engine will hang at that speed even when you take your foot off the gas. The compressor for the AC also shuts off. If you down shift or tap the throttle to momentarily raise the engine speed to 2,500 – 3,000 rpm, the AC compressor comes on again and the engine idles beautifully. This response is very reproducible. I have recently replaced the two oxygen sensors, the throttle position sensor and the idle air control valve. It has been a guessing game because there are no engine codes. Except for this idle issue, the truck runs great.

Try cleaning your throttle plate real well sometimes that will help a lot. Also make sure that your throttle cable is not hanging up on something or maybe frayed? I generally use Seafoam Deep Creep to clean the throttle plates with good results.

I have the 2.3 liter and had a bad idle problem, replaced a bunch of sensors and i think the main culprit was the Line going from the carbon box near power steering pump/ radiator was severely cracked under neath the throttle body. It connected under TB on driver side. I couldnt see it until i took off the TB to clean it.
