Front drive line problem

I have a 2003 4x4 and i thought i just had a bad u-joint in the front driveline at the t-case. Took out the drive shaft and all the ujoints are good but i had a lot of slop rough movement in the double u-joint. Upon disasembly, I discovered the entire center ball and socket is trashed (first time I have ever see one of these). Are these repairable or do i need to buy the intire driveline asembly? I have only owned the truck for a month so I am still learning about it.

I have a double u-joint in the front of mine, I believe. What it sounds like you have is a constant velocity joint like front wheel drive cars. I believe you only have two choices, if it's u-joints replace the u-joints, or if it's a CV joint, you will have to replace the CV as a unit.

It is a combination of the two. There is a double u-joint set up and in the middle of the double joint(inbetween them) there is a scoket, ball and boot. You can not see the inner ball until you remove the shaft from the truck. I was suprised. My haynes book only mentions this joint briefly by stating: when removing the u-joint, pay close attetion to the ball and spring and the order they come out.: lol...thanks

If it has serviceable u-joints, try just replacing them. It sounds like the center ball is reuseable.

The ujoints are in good shape. Problem is the socket and pin the ball setup goes in is trashed. I dont have much choice except buy another drive line.

There should be a single u-joint on one end, and a double u-joint (CV joint) on the other end.

Are you talking about the "slip yoke" - which is where the driveshaft can extend and retract with the up-and-down motion of the front axle?

If it's acting like a "ball and socket", it's trashed - it should just extend and retract.
