Hi everyone I am trying to gather some info on a project I hope to start in the not to distant future. I currently have a 94 f-150 it is the off road edtion has the 302 which I think is under powered. I would like to build a stout 351 with out going to radical. I was thinking a new cam, kieth black flat top pistons, maybe a new intake, mild head work, it will be my daily driver so it needs to be very reliable. I also though about a 351 from a lightning but would this be alot of work to put this engine in a standard f150. This is a 5 speed transmission pick up and a 4x4 (we all now how great the mazda 5 speed is) I was thinking of a different trans combo. I was thinking about a richmond 6 six speed maybe a ford six speed? I also thought about changing the gears I will have to look what gears are in the axles now I do alot of towing in the winter I pull a 22 ft sled trailer with 5 sleds. Also use the pickup for hunting so there is some off roading. Also I have only had the pick up for a year I believe the previous ower put the wrong size tires on the pick up. The door jam sticker says it should have 265/75/15 believe and the tires on the pick up are 235/75/15. Any thoughts or ideas on this project would be great. I am just not sure what diection to go and dont what to waste a bunch of money on a turd. I would much rather do it right the first time. Thank you to all in advance.
Is the motor mass air? If so you can drop a 5.8 in without changing anything computer related, if not you'll need a 5.8 computer.
A cam and longtube headers on the 5.8 will put you where you want to be, the 5.8 produces so much more low rpm grunt than the 5.0 is silly, I swapped a 5.8 into my truck in place of a 5.0 about 8 years ago and I'm still impressed with how well it works.
Depending upon what vintage 5.8 you get your hands on will determine what type cam you use, the pre '94 blocks used flat tappet cams and post '94 used roller cams. The roller motors are more desirable but the cams are big $$ and you can get just as much power out of a flat tappet motor. For a towing application the stock heads and intake are fine, if you do anything port the exhaust side of the heads, but otherwise the small port volume works in your favor and produces better low rpm TQ. The stock injectors are also fine here, and that's good because upsizing them requires a tuner and that will cost you more money. I'm currently in the process of collecting everything to put better heads on my motor, and I'm at $2300 and counting.
ZF S5-42 or S5-47 5spd out of an F250 or F350 4x4, it has a granny low and OD. These trannys are a bolt in swap no drive shaft mods and your T-case will bolt right too it. This would be a lot cheaper than any other option I got mine for $400 after I traded in my old 5spd.

I dont have the engine yet I have not started checking seriously for and engine yet. I was thinking a 95 or 96 5.8 as for piston you think I should put in flat tops? As for the heads I would much rather just keep them stock if I would not see drastic gains. If I went a step or two over stock maybe an RV cam would that be my best bet? Also it would be best to find a MAF engine? I am looking for a strong engine not necessarily a fast engine. Would it be much gain to go with a 6 speed ( richmond or ford) or stay with a 5 speed?
It doesn't matter what engine you get if you are rebuilding it anyway, though a late model 5.8 would be better than an early motor in this case. Cast flat top pistons with valve reliefs are all you need, then you can safely utilize a cam with 0.500" lift. The stock 5.8 rotating assembly is more than strong enough for any power level you can squeeze out of the stock heads, the only parts I changed in my rebuild were the con rod bolts, bearings and pistons, and it's holding up just fine.
