I am currently shopping for a used extended cab 4x4 F-150, and I was wondering what were the main differences between the '97 and the '98. I currently have an offer from a local farmer with a '97 Lariat with 87.5k miles, 5.4L, tow package, ext. warranty, etc. for $15,500. Since I'm a little picky, this is actually the closest thing that I found to what I'm looking for although I would like to have a '98 XLT. Is there anything that should sway me to avoid this '97 and to keep looking?

Hi! I have a '97 reg cab XLT so I can't tell you exactly what you're asking for but I can give you an idea of things to watch out for.
The '97's thru mid 2000's had a door crack problem. It's not a major problem & isnt covered unless under warranty. I have the cracks in both doors - <1/4" so I am not really upset. I also know some of the 5.4 motors had a piston slap problem - I believe it was the motors made in Canada that had the problem. One way to tell where the truck was made is to see if the VIN starts with 2F - that's a Canadian truck. If it starts with 1F it's a US made truck.
I have alot of info so if you'd like to email me I will send it to you. I saved a bunch of articles on the '97 F150 which might help you in the decision.
Good luck! My email is Cowlady18@cs.com. Hope to hear from you soon!
