Looking on the internet for information on hooking up the electric brake controller and found this forum.
I have a 2005 F150 Lariat supercab, 5.4 with factory tow package. I have the factory electric brake pigtail which has 5 wires. I purchased a Hopkins electric brake controller which only has 4 wires. The factory pigtail wires are marked blue=to electric trailer brakes, white=ground, lite green=stop lamp, red=feed wire from battery, black=illumination feed. The wires on the controller are marked white=ground, blue=Trailer electric brakes, black=positive terminal on battery, red=cold side of stop lamp switch. Obviously white goes to white and blue goes to blue. My question is where does green from pigtail, wire to on controller, black (or brown) from pigtail, wire to on controller and red on pigtail wire to. Obviously there is an extra wire on the pigtail.
Am I thinking right:
White from pigtail to white on controller
Blue from pigtail to Blue on controller
Red from pigtail to black on controller
Green on pigtail to red on controller
and that leaves me with one extra wire from the pigtail. The black one (or brown according to what I've read. looks black to me)
That's what I'm thinking that the illumination wire would not wire to the controller. I already checked Hopkins website and the wiring instructions are the same ones that came in the package which is pretty vague. Guess that's why I posted my question here.
I bought a break controller 2 weeks ago. It took me around 4-6 hours to try to get info on the hook up.(my first break controller ever) I left out the brown wire (illumination) and the break controller works great, stops the trailer anyway. I'm guessing the (illumination)wire is for a controller with a bright light that would be dimmed by the dash light ****.
