I have a 1994 7.3 IDI turbo. For some reason when using the front tank and the gage reads 1/4 tank or less the motor seems like it intermittently starts to run out of fuel. I HAVE NOT tested the rear tank to see if it does the same. I have noticed when I remove the fuel cap on the front tank I can hear air rush IN (I also check the rear tank cap with a little less than 1/2 tank and no air rush). Could my problem be the fuel cap not "venting" correctly and creating a vacuum in the tank and starving the motor of fuel? Or does anyone have any idea what is going on. Just wondering what the general consensus is here.
yup. you are getting a vacuum in the tank due to a clogged vent. i am not sure if you have a vented cap, or a vented tank, but either way, the vent is not working properly.
Mine does the same thing on the front tank. The sending units in the fuel tanks go bad frequently. When they do, they start sucking air from inside the tank. Im not sure what they look like as I have lived with it for over a year now but this summer I will probably drop the tank and take a look. I know its not my tank cap cause I have left it off before and found it in the bed when I filled up again. Also If I have less than a 1/4 tank in the front and I hit my brakes hard, it will die. (A real nice thing to happen in a busy city intercetion at rush hour!!!) Good luck
