Bought a 93 F350 the previous owner said something about turning up the injector pump for better performance.
After driving recently with a load I have some questions about how to correct what was done.
The truck drives alright empty but lacks any low end torque. When pulling a large empty machine trailer last weekend the truck had to be down shifted to deal with even minor uphill grades and poured black smoke when given some petal but did not pull. The temperature gauge raised almost as fast as the speedo.Keeping the rpm around 2500 provided the best power.
What should I do?
It seems like the pump might be timed incorrectly and providing too much fuel.Does this sound like too much advance or retard?
Any advice would be most appreciated.
The air filter is new so adjusting the fuel screw and checking the IP timing marks sound like a good place to start. How can youj tell if the fuel screw has been leaned out too much?
The plan is to replace the IP and injectors but that has to wait until daughters university bill gets paid down some. She is going to Marietta down by Dave's part of the world.
just try turning it down one flat at a time till it gets where you like it. To keep from going insane trying to find the screw in the little window, I've found it easiest to just pop those two bolts off and pop the front inspection plate off to see where the position of the pin is ( see ziggs article ) and I use that anaerobic gasket sealer when putting the plate back on. It cleans up easily and sets fairly quick.
