I've just started having problems with my 85 Bronco 2, 6cyl, 2.8 liter. The starter spins but does not engage the flywheel. I currently have the battery on the charger (put a different newer battery in that need charging) and a new solinoid in. While going down to slightly knock the starter with a hammer, I found it to be loose and missing at least 1 bolt. I tightened the 1 i saw and got the starter to sit up tightly. After this the starter seemed to turn with more power but still does not engage the flywheel. I'm hopeing that the battery just needs a good charge now for it to work. The starter and solinoid I replaced about 1.5 years ago and i just now again replaced the solinoid.
What size bolts do I need to replace that 1 (or more) missing starter motor bolts?
Aditionally, what may be the problem with the starter not engaging the flywheel?

If it was recently replaced, alignment. Otherwise the bendix (gear on the starter that pops out) may be chewed up or burnt out from being misaligned. You could take the starter off and test it on the ground to see if the gear pops out or bring it to Advance or Auto Zone to have it bench tested.
A lot of V6 starters only have two bolts holding them in. When you take the starter out for a test, take the other bolt to the hardware store and get another like it. Get a grade 8 bolt at least. Then you should be all set for the bolts. Like rebocardo said, take the starter to a parts store to see if the Bendix is kicking the drive gear out when it spins so it will engage the flywheel.
The problem was when the first mouting bolt fell out, the flywheel knicked the end starter assembly and jammed the sprocket from poping forward. A little help from a hammer to break it free, a new bolt and its working perfectly.
