Well, pardon the incursion on your forum, but the remanufactured 77 power steering pump I put on my 65 howls like a banshee.
The power steering however works great! So I am happy to a degree.
But the noise from the pump is just plain annoying.
How much noise should I just get used to? The pump has a lifetime warrantly (O'reilleys) so I can plead my case and try another one. But if its not likely to be any more quiet than the first........
This is so loud that sometime I can't hear my rods knocking anymore......
Loud like a whining? My 99 SDuty I had the pump was grossly loud, added a small amount of friction modifier (smells like cat spray) and it quieted right down... not sure if this works with the older pumps.
And by all means, don't pardon for the incursion, come over more often! How is the weather in ol'MO <~~ originally from Harrisonville, just to the south of you.
I would probably go for a new pump, as I also CAN'T stand noise that shouldn't be!
Make sure the clamps on the return line to the pump are tight. Any tiny amount air that is sucked into the system will make the pump whine and damage the pump.
sometimes if gets down to a little whine you need to turn the wheel to the stop, (all the way one direction) bump it against it lightly and do the same in the other direction as that seems to get rid of the last little bit of air, have not had to do that myself for a while since I changed the input seal which ended up very easy to do, so if it leaks anywhere, need to fix it or you will fight that until you do..
Pull the dipstick and check for tiny air bubbles in the fluid. Either it's a bad pump? Or there is still air in the system. Most of us know a few unique tricks to bleed these puppies out.
I had the same problem on my 77 went through 4 different pumps. Finally fixed it with a Saginaw swap and haven't had a problem from it since and that was 8 years ago.
Best solution is go to Rock auto and search part number 20624 and you will find a Saginaw pump.
Not positive it will fit your year. Since I put one on my 79 it is very quiet.
It is a perfect fit but keep in mind my 460 brackets may be different than what you have, pulley lingned up perfect too. Hoses even ligned up right on the money. I cant say for sure that it steers better but it seems like it does and it is quiet.
what's the condition of the fluid? if it's really old and broken down, the squal could be due to that.
If you are looking for a cheap and dirty fix, try throwing in a small bottle of the Lucas power steering stop leak treatment. Worked great on my 89 town car with very loud steering.
